Request an AuditThe 4-Tier Impact Triage Matrix
Not all accessibility defects carry equal urgency. Prioritizing by WCAG criterion number is inefficient. Instead, prioritize by user barrier severity:
- P0 - Critical Blocker: Completely prevents a user with a disability from completing a core task (e.g., keyboard trap, missing submit button label, inaccessible captcha).
- P1 - High Severity: Causes substantial difficulty or disorientation, but a workaround exists (e.g., confusing focus order, incorrect expanded state announcements, poor form error identification).
- P2 - Moderate Severity: Non-compliant with WCAG but has low functional impact on core task completion (e.g., minor contrast failure on secondary footer text, missing table caption).
- P3 - Low / Cosmetic: Technical deviation with minimal user impact (e.g., redundant ARIA attribute that causes no harm).
Blockers vs. Usability Inconveniences
Always fix P0 blockers immediately in hotfixes or current sprints. P1 and P2 defects should be scheduled across regular agile sprint allocations (e.g., reserving 15-20% of sprint velocity for accessibility backlog reduction).
Integrating A11y Bugs into Jira/GitHub
Tag tickets with wcag-criterion, user-impact, and component-source. When a defect originates in a shared design system component, elevate its priority to P0 because fixing it heals multiple downstream pages simultaneously.
