Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)
The globally recognized technical standard for digital accessibility, structured around four foundational principles: Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust (POUR).
Technical Scope & Purpose
Developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI), WCAG is the universal baseline referenced by legislation, government procurement, and corporate policies worldwide.
Core Requirements & Success Criteria
Perceivable
Information and user interface components must be presentable to users in ways they can perceive (e.g., text alternatives, captions, adaptable layouts, sufficient color contrast).
Operable
User interface components and navigation must be operable (e.g., full keyboard access, sufficient time, seizure prevention, intuitive navigation, target sizing).
Understandable
Information and the operation of the user interface must be understandable (e.g., readable text, predictable behavior, input assistance, and clear error recovery).
Robust
Content must be robust enough that it can be interpreted reliably by a wide variety of user agents, including assistive technologies (e.g., clean markup, valid names, roles, and values).
Conformance Levels
The most fundamental accessibility requirements. Failing Level A creates severe, total barriers that prevent users with disabilities from using the digital product.
The standard benchmark for most global accessibility laws and enterprise policies. Addresses the most common and significant barriers for broad digital inclusion.
The highest, most stringent level of accessibility. Recommended as an enhancement for specialized audiences, but generally not required as a blanket policy for entire commercial websites.
Applicability & Scope
- Websites and Web Applications
- Mobile Applications (iOS/Android)
- Electronic Documents (PDF/EPUB)
- Software UI & Intranets
TaggedWorks Engineering Role
We audit, remediate, and architect digital products against WCAG 2.1 and 2.2 Level AA, providing empirical proof of technical conformance.
Ensure your digital platforms meet global accessibility standards.
Our senior accessibility engineers audit and remediate digital applications against WCAG, Section 508, EN 301 549, and PDF/UA, and document the test evidence.
